By Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers
I put the paper down. I was 15 papers in with 17 to go – reading the sexual autobiographies I’d assigned my graduate family therapy students. It was the second paper I had read in the last two hours of a young woman who had pelvic pain and vaginismus. My stomach was in knots. How many of these papers have I now read in my career? This young woman had been married three years and had been unable to have sex – it just hurt too much. She was completely freaked out about sex and hated herself for it. It was like her vagina had a mind of its own and had shut itself closed. She felt like a freak.

By Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers Have you ever found yourself absolutely confused or angry about the messages sent to women about their bodies, sexuality, their value? Even the messages we send to men seem confusing, limiting and degrading. Life lately has invited me again into these conversations of confusion and frustration. By Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers I was recently talking to a college student who had been saving her pennies for two years to buy her dream car - a 1966 Ford Falcon. She bubbled over about how she washed it, made seat covers for it, found other local Falcon lovers and parked it far away from other cars when in a public parking lot. She was exuberant about her "new" car. Now to someone else, a 47-year-old car would be a piece of junk. For that person, one more dent would mean nothing. Sounds indicating a need for a mechanic, would go ignored. Oil changes would be forgotten. We care for what is precious to us. By Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers Question: Okay Tina, I thought of you when I saw this on the daily show (am I going to think of you now every time I see something about sex?) and I thought you might get a kick out of it. The other 2 are media things from Mark Driscoll's sermon series on the Song of Solomon. I heard most of the series, and I was curious to hear your feedback on some of the theological ideas. I found some of it very interesting, but I was hoping for your take. Is it just more "don't?" In your studies have you come to different ideas from the scriptures? I'd love to hear your thoughts if you have the time. Thanks Tina! -Gabe |
